Caroline Kraemer Wales

I grew up in Grenoble, a sportswoman at heart, with my feet on skis and my head in the clouds. The discovery of sailing will continue to make me love the open air, the wind and the physical effort.

As for my studies, after a BTS (technical assistant to an engineer) at the Lycée de la Martinière Duchère in Lyon in 1989, I graduated from the ESDI (Ecole Supérieure de Design Industriel) in Paris in 1993. The subject of my diploma: « Safety at sea for catamarans and windsurfers: IAS – Informer Alerter Sauver ».

Being a designer in a company is my goal. I think that design, beyond its impact on the product, is at the crossroads of many professions in a company: it links marketing studies, market feedback from sales people, concrete development from the design office and the constraints of production. The designer can have this central role of project management, in order to link all the constraints and put them into his concept proposals.

I then took the initiative to do a DEA (Master2) CPN – Conception de Produit Nouveau – at the Arts et Métiers school in Paris. It’s a master’s degree in methodology that I think can be like a common language between the different departments of the company. I worked for a year at Clairbois in Moirans en Montagne in the Jura to experiment with these beautiful ideas.

Then I left my professional life for 15 years. Alsace, United Arab Emirates and Italy where I follow my husband for his work. I took the time to discover the world, to make ceramics, to give birth to our 3 children, to watch them grow up a little and back in France to help us all to reintegrate…  😉

Since 2011, settled in Strasbourg, I work on my own under the name of Arcipelago. It is for me the possibility to work at home, in contact with my children who are finishing growing up. Arcipelago gives me the opportunity to get back to professional life. And this site in the GRAPHICS section shows you the different projects I have been involved in.

At the end of 2019, the health crisis enters our lives. I take the opportunity to have a nice herniated disc … with an operation in June 2020.

It’s a bit of a crisis in my head too … I’ve been searching for years for the meaning of our lives in the production/consumption society. I feel like I’ve shirked some of my responsibilities by going « OFF » professionally. And how does one go back to work after 15 years in the open air?

I worked on my own and I met great people, with generous projects, always at the service of people.

But for me there is something missing … I want to be able to get up in the morning and put my ideas and my energy at the service of a respectful world. Respectful of nature, respectful of my neighbour, respectful of the life in us!

I discovered the Shift Project and Jean Marc Jancovici … just to boost my morale! I became a shifter by giving them a hand with the layout of the PTEF reports (Plan de Tansition de l’Economie Française).
I have a project to make a game about the environment and I discover that there are already many of them: The climate fresco, the Celsuis project and its game Carbonik, Inventons nos vies bas carbone, etc… I took the time to discover them and to train myself to use them. The objective of these games is to give the opportunity to share on the very anxiety-provoking topic of climate change. They are technical teaching aids inspired by the reports of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, created in 1988 by the UN. It is composed of scientific experts (climatologists, economists, etc.) mandated by the governments of the 195 member countries. They are responsible for reaching a consensus between all the countries.) The aim of these games, which are educational tools, is to raise awareness among everyone and to enable them to take part in this transition, which will require drastic changes in their lives. This is not the time to be giving lessons. We are all on board the same planet and it is a question of trying to soften the coming times a little. At least we can say that we have tried something!
Then the circular economy enters my head and I feel that it is something that really touches me. I’m getting back in touch with design and the product cycle. During my training with CIRCULAB, systems thinking gave me a head start. I am now looking to combine my various skills to join a company or an association to work on this subject. See my infographics on systems thinking and the circular economy of fertilizers.

I am therefore looking for a job, which can integrate all or part of my skills exposed in this site but with the objective of participating in the dynamics of the circular economy.

In the meantime, of course, I continue to follow and develop my arcipelago projects. I’m training myself in the eco-design of websites to try to reduce the carbon impact of our clicks!
